Supporting Children Exposed to Family Violence

ccadvOnce again the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, along with Connecticut’s Children Medical Center, and The Children’s Center on Family Violence.  put together a very informative day.

The program, Building Brighter Futures- Supporting Children Exposed to Family Violence had amazing speakers! They shared the collaborative steps being taken to ensure victims get ALL the help they need in the many many avenues that arise when one needs to escape from a dangerous situation.

They discussed the work they are doing to assist children impacted by family violence who are residing in Connecticut’s domestic violence shelters and /or receiving supports and counseling through community programming. At the end of the day Karen Jarmoc, CEO,CCADV facilitated a panel of Family and Child Advocates from Connecticut’s domestic violence organizations.

There are 18 shelters in the state of Connecticut  and last year CCADV served nearly 50,000 victims of domestic Conn Childrens medical Centerviolence through their network of these 18 community-based domestic violence providers. These shelters operate at more than 114% capacity all the time whereby more than 1,000 adults and 1,200 children seek refuge and safety.

With the shelters at 114% capacity and the statistics of 1 out of 3 women and 1 out of 7 men enduring some form of abuse, what does that say about how much more of a need there is for more to be involved in raising awareness?

I had the privilege of sharing a few minutes of  conversation with one of the speakers,  Dr. Nina Livingston about her talk, “The Impact of Family Violence on Children from a Practitioner’s Perspective”.  Dr. Livingston is a child abuse pediatrician and  the  medical director of Hartford Regional Child Abuse Service, as well as an assistant professor of pediatrics at the UCONN school of Medicine. She is an expert in the evaluation of suspected child abuse and neglect and the impact of family violence on children.

Please consider researching, talking, teaching your young, volunteering and/or pledging. Don’t know were to start visit http://www.caseymorley.com and click on the resource page. Or visit http://www.ctcadv.org/information-about-domestic-violence/what-domestic-violence/  I am sure you will learn SHOCKING statistics!!

Together we can make a difference.

Hugs, Casey

Testimonial from Deacon Dana

What an awesome  experience I had meeting many wonderful warm and welcoming parishioners and friends from the Church of St Mary in Portland CT. Prior to their National Day of Prayer celebration, in which I was their speaker, they invited me to a luncheon. I had the opportunity to meet the people on their team, past speakers as well as two staff members from the New Horizons Domestic Violence Shelter.

St. mary's Catholic Church- Portland, Ct

St. Mary’s Church Portland, CT

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Elizabeth Regan from the  Rivereast  News Bulletin. Later we all enjoyed good food, laughs and great conversation. I left there feeling right at home and looking forward to the National Day of Prayer celebration.

This is what Deacon Dana had to say.

On May 10, 2016, the Church of St Mary, Portland, Connecticut, hosted an Ecumenical National Day of Prayer Service. It was an evening of prayer and song with our prayer mission focusing on the societal problem of domestic violence.

During the service, Casey Morley, author of the book, Crawling Out, shared her journey to an empowered life after breaking a cycle of domestic violence no one should have to endure. During the service, a good will collection was taken up for New Horizons, a domestic violence shelter for women and children in Middlesex County.

With her book, Crawling Out”, our guest speaker Casey Morley has shined the light of hope on the tragic problem of domestic abuse and vi9olence that has destroyed so many of our nation’s families. Casey is a domestic violence survivor who offers hope, healing, and educates those who don’t understand. Casey’s mission is to help lower domestic violence statistics through raising an awareness of the reality of abuse.

Casey’s presentation during the St Mary service was  difficult to hear as she detailed stories of the physical and emotional abuse she experienced first hand as a child and then in her adult relationships. Casey’s presentation was very inspirational and moving as she touched many hearts that evening with her journey from an abuse victim to an empowered woman who is dedicated to helping other abuse victims reclaim their lives.

I am very thankful that we chose Casey to speak at our prayer service as she gave a wonderful talk that evening on a most difficult topic, the tragic problem of domestic violence. I would highly recommend Casey as a speaker and I would encourage anyone who seeks more information on the topic of domestic violence to read Casey’s outstanding book, “Crawling Out”

Judge’s Commentary (in its entirety)…
Crawling Out, Casey Morley
“Congratulations on writing and publishing your book! The packaging is polished and professional. The front cover image is powerful and drew my attention immediately. I do think your name could be in lighter or brighter font to make it more prominent. The back cover copy does a great job of marketing your book to your audience. You have done a great job blending nonfiction, inspiration, and personal experience. You handle a difficult subject matter in a sensitive and caring manner. The structure and organization of the book is effective. Good job with pacing: each chapter flowed smoothly and you have included just the right amount of details and description. You focus on showing us the story in action and dialogue and only use narration when necessary. I appreciated the many resources you included for your readers. Great job with grammar and proofreading. The formatting of the interior of the book is effective, although the spacing between lines seems a little large: you might be able to save on paper and printing costs by tightening this up a bit. Watch out for long blocks of italics: this can be difficult to read and it dilutes the impact of using italics. You have a great web site: I think you could put the URL in a more prominent place on the book cover.”
