{"id":197,"date":"2016-06-27T17:28:03","date_gmt":"2016-06-27T17:28:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crawlingout.net\/?p=197"},"modified":"2016-07-24T13:45:56","modified_gmt":"2016-07-24T13:45:56","slug":"supporting-children-exposed-to-family-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crawlingout.net\/index.php\/2016\/06\/27\/supporting-children-exposed-to-family-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting Children Exposed to Family Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-200 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/crawlingout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ccadv-300x98.jpg\" alt=\"ccadv\" width=\"300\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crawlingout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ccadv-300x98.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crawlingout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ccadv.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Once again the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctcadv.org\/\">Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence<\/a>, along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.connecticutchildrens.org\/\">Connecticut&#8217;s Children Medical Center<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.connecticutchildrens.org\/community-child-health\/childrens-center-family-violence\/\">The Children&#8217;s Center on Family Violence<\/a>.\u00a0 put together a very informative day.<\/p>\n<p>The program, <em><strong>Building Brighter Futures- Supporting Children Exposed to Family Violence\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>had amazing speakers! They shared the collaborative steps being taken to ensure victims get ALL the help they need in the many many avenues that arise when one needs to escape from a dangerous situation.<\/p>\n<p>They discussed the work they are doing to assist children impacted by family violence who are residing in Connecticut&#8217;s domestic violence shelters and \/or receiving supports and counseling through community programming. At the end of the day Karen Jarmoc, CEO,CCADV facilitated a panel of Family and Child Advocates from Connecticut&#8217;s domestic violence organizations.<\/p>\n<p>There are 18 shelters in the state of Connecticut\u00a0 and last year CCADV served nearly 50,000 victims of domestic <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-202 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/crawlingout.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Conn-Childrens-medical-Center.png\" alt=\"Conn Childrens medical Center\" width=\"115\" height=\"148\" \/>violence through their network of these 18 community-based domestic violence providers. These shelters operate at more than 114% capacity all the time whereby more than 1,000 adults and 1,200 children seek refuge and safety.<\/p>\n<p>With the shelters at 114% capacity and the statistics of 1 out of 3 women and 1 out of 7 men enduring some form of abuse, what does that say about how much more of a need there is for more to be involved in raising awareness?<\/p>\n<p>I had the privilege of sharing a few minutes of \u00a0conversation with one of the speakers, \u00a0Dr. Nina Livingston about her talk, <em>&#8220;The Impact of Family Violence on Children from a Practitioner&#8217;s Perspective&#8221;.\u00a0<\/em> Dr. Livingston is a child abuse pediatrician and\u00a0 the \u00a0medical director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.connecticutchildrens.org\/community-child-health\/childrens-center-family-violence\/contact-us\/\">Hartford Regional Child Abuse Service<\/a>, as well as an assistant professor of pediatrics at the UCONN school of Medicine. She is an expert in the evaluation of suspected child abuse and neglect and the impact of family violence on children.<\/p>\n<p>Please consider researching, talking, teaching your young, volunteering and\/or pledging.
